The Mach 1 Group (Mach 1), a Texas-based, nationally recognized public relations firm, proudly announced its 2024 pro-bono partnership with Make Our Schools Safe (MOSS), a leading school-safety non-profit. Founded by Lori and Dr. Ilan Alhadeff, whose daughter, Alyssa, was tragically killed in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting, MOSS is dedicated to empowering students and staff by creating a culture of safety in the
classroom.

“At Mach 1, we believe in giving back to the community, and this year, our team is lending its
expertise to a non-profit with a powerful mission to protect students, teachers and staff in schools
across the country,” said Mach 1 Founder and CEO Katherine McLane. “We are honored to
work alongside MOSS to raise awareness for enhanced school security and emergency response
plans. Together, we will drive impactful change for this life-saving organization.”

Over the past 11 years, Mach 1 has become one of Texas’s top public affairs and strategic
communications firms. Each year, the firm takes on a respected organization as a pro-bono
client, providing expert communications strategy, counsel and support at no charge to the
organization – an estimated annual value of $50,000.

“The Mach 1 Group is a powerful partner for advocacy and public relations nationwide,” said
Lori Alhadeff, Founder and President of MOSS. “We are thrilled to have been chosen as this
year’s pro-bono client. Their expertise makes them instrumental in driving meaningful policy
change and elevating public awareness of our mission. With Mach 1’s support, we are confident
we can further achieve our goal of making schools safe.”

MOSS provides resources, training and education on safety protocols while advocating for local,
state and national policy changes to improve school safety standards. The organization
championed the passage of Alyssa’s Law in several states. This groundbreaking legislation
requires public schools to install silent panic alarms linked directly to law enforcement.

Through its Safe Schools Program, MOSS assesses school safety measures and offers grants for
safety enhancements. It has also funded over $400,000 in school safety projects, including stop-
the-bleed kits, perimeter fencing, bulletproof backpacks, mental health programs, security huts
and student scholarships. Operating nationally, MOSS engages parents, students, educators and
community leaders to foster a collaborative approach to creating safer school environments.

Earned media is a powerful way to raise awareness for your organization’s event.

Success starts with allotting an adequate planning timeframe. Depending on the size of the event and the desired media coverage, your timeframe could be anywhere from eight weeks to one year.

The More Time You Devote: the Bigger the Impact.
A long runway creates space for the various stages of media planning and outreach. You want to raise awareness before, during and after the event. This requires understanding the event’s unique needs, relevant outlets and reporters. Having a long runway can be especially helpful when identifying spokespersons.

Get to Know the Spokespersons
Identifying spokespersons is more than just making a list of people associated with the organization. Dig into their backgrounds, take time to hear their stories and gauge their interest in media interviews. Having multiple spokespersons willing and prepared to speak to media is a great way to ensure someone is always available for media inquiries.

Devise a Media Plan
When making a media plan, remember to expand beyond the traditional approach. Consider industry-specific outlets, community newsletters, social media accounts and weekend TV programs that cover community members. Take the time to seek out reporters who have shown interest in relevant industries – or even who seem personally aligned with your organization’s mission.

Days prior to the event, issue media advisories and implement a follow-up plan, prioritizing mainstream outlets and broadcast stations. Once the event concludes, issue a press release with collateral and B-roll. This is one step you can’t afford to miss.

Sometimes, a paper wants to be at your event but cannot send staff due to breaking news. Providing outlets with collateral and B-roll is like gifting them a story, neatly packaged with a bow on top.

With proper planning and expert strategy, you could watch your event get spotlighted by local news.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday — June 27, 2023

AUSTIN, TX — The Mach 1 Group (Mach 1), an award-winning, nationally-recognized public relations firm, has announced its 2023 pro-bono partnership with the Austin-based non-profit Women in Neuroscience (WiN), whose mission is to build a diverse community of women leaders in neuroscience and neurology.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Mach 1 has grown to become one of the top public affairs and strategic communications firms in Texas. As a way to give back to the community they love, the firm takes an Austin-based non-profit organization as a pro-bono client each year — providing expert communications counsel and strategy worth over $42,000 in value, at no charge to the organization.

“We’re grateful to be able to donate our services to an excellent Austin cause every year and as a women-owned and operated business, partnering with a non-profit that values and empowers the careers of women in advanced medical fields is a dream,” said Mach 1 Founder and CEO Katherine McLane. “We are eager to lend our expertise in strategic communications to help raise awareness and drive impactful change for this important organization.”

Women in Neuroscience was founded in 2018 to honor Harvey Nudelman, Ph.D., a neuroscience researcher and teacher. Harvey died in January of 2018 of the rare neurodegenerative disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. It is through a diverse and growing community of neuroscientists that WiN hopes to accelerate progress in the field to confront the tyranny of brain disease and injury.

Each year, WiN carefully chooses a cohort of young women, with a particular focus on first-generation, underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged students, to offer them an invaluable opportunity: an eight-week clinical or research internship. This program not only provides a stipend to support their summer of learning, but also grants them access to the esteemed University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) and San Antonio (UTSA) neuroscience departments, Dell Medical Neurology research labs in Austin and UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Through continuous growth, the organization has evolved into a comprehensive program that encompasses mentorships, scholarships and a lifelong community of support. WiN was founded in collaboration with esteemed institutions such as UT Austin, Dell Medical School and The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, solidifying its commitment to empowering young women.

“Partnering with such a highly regarded communications team will open new doors for our organization,” said WiN’s Executive Director, Emily Pickens. “With their support, we hope to see WiN achieve greater fundraising goals so that we can provide even more worthy young women internship experiences with the financial and networking support they need to advance their careers in neuroscience and neurology.”

Mach 1 boasts a veteran team of former press secretaries, government staffers, campaign aides and journalists and was recently honored nationally as a 2023 “Team of the Year” by PRDaily. For more information about The Mach 1 Group, please visit www.themach1group.com.
